It’s no secret that Instagram is one of the best places for real estate agents like you to build an audience and attract potential clients. Billions of people use Instagram each month (really! Instagram has 2.35 billion monthly users), and that means that the people in your area who need your real estate expertise are on the platform. Using Instagram as part of a digital real estate marketing strategy is a smart real estate agent’s answer to the old hustle of cold-calling and door-knocking.
But in the world of Instagram marketing, there’s a new kid on the block: Reels, which are Instagram’s answer to TikTok. People really like Reels, and Instagram’s algorithm prioritizes Reels, which means that they get shown to more people than your standard single photo or photo carousel.
Creating Reels will help get your content and your real estate biz in front of more people. But for many real estate agents, creating those 10-15 second videos can feel overwhelming or intimidating. If you want to create Reels for your business but just haven’t been able to start, you’re not alone. That’s why we’re going to look at the root cause of why you’re not consistently creating Reels and give you a plan to get you on your Reels game.
Why You’re Not Consistently Creating Reels
You’ve probably seen how cool and engaging Reels can be. If you haven’t, head over to Instagram and check them out now! But creating your own Reels to market your real estate business can feel like something that only other real estate agents can do. Let’s look at a few of the reasons why you might not feel like you can create Reels.
Getting a feel for the Reels that are out there is important. But at some point, like when you spend hours scrolling and searching for “ideas”, this can become a form of procrastination–not research. Once you find a concept or an audio you like, bookmark it for inspiration (we’ll talk more about how you can translate this into Reel creation later!).
On the other hand, you might feel like you don’t have time to research at all. You’re a busy real estate agent, and scrolling through Instagram Reels might sound more like your idea of a vacation than work. You feel like you don’t have time to dive into figuring the whole thing out, so what’s the point?! (Scroll to the bottom of this blog for a trick on this!)
You might have some good ideas, but you feel like you don’t know where to start. Reels are different from a standard Instagram post, but that’s part of the beauty of it! You also might love Reels but have no idea how to apply the trending audios to your business and make Reels that are fun but still professional. It’s a fine line to walk, so I totally get this.
But here’s the thing: no matter why you feel like you can’t create Reels, you absolutely can create amazing Reels that will help you grow your real estate biz.
Reels will help you stand out from the crowd of real estate agents on Instagram. Because Reels take a little more effort to make than a regular old Instagram post or Story, not many agents are using them. This gives you a ton of leverage. By investing just a little more energy into social media marketing, you can skyrocket your results.
Plus, Reels themselves are super fun and shareable. Instagram users love to share Reels with other users, which means that you can easily get in front of more people. Reels are another great way to build your credibility on social media by sharing your skills and knowledge.
How to Consistently Create Real Estate Reels
Now that you’ve identified why you feel stuck on consistently creating real estate Reels, you can create a game plan for Reel success.
Stock Up on B-Roll
When you have a bunch of filler shots, also known as b-roll, creating Reels becomes so much faster and easier! Take a day to create a bunch of b-roll video shots of yourself and of some beautiful properties. Save these shots in a photo folder on your phone, and then use them to fill in videos and images for your Reels.
Collect Audio
As you’re scrolling through Reels for inspiration, you should focus on sourcing audio clips. When you find a Reel you like, save the audio by tapping “save audio.” Instagram will automatically save the audio into an audio folder.
To stay organized, I highly recommend creating a spreadsheet on Google Sheets or Excel to keep track of the audios. Add a link to each of the audios you’ve saved. Then create a section where you can write out your idea for the Reel so you don’t forget your great ideas. Jot down what the topic is and how you want to execute it. Make sure to add in a date for when you want to post the Reel to help you stay accountable!
Figure Out Your Goal
When you’re ready to start creating, decide what your Reel is going to be about. What is the goal behind it? Are you going to share educational content that will help your buyers and sellers make better decisions in real estate? Or are you going for a more promotional Reel where you spotlight a listing? Or maybe you just want to do something fun to help your audience get to know you more. Whatever direction you go in, make sure you have a goal in mind before you start creating.
Create!
When it comes to creating Reels, don’t do something that feels inauthentic to you. Instead, decide what feels most comfortable and true to you. If you don't want to dance, don’t make yourself dance. In fact, if it makes sense for the content, you can absolutely create a Reel out of b-roll.
To keep organized, I recommend that you keep your Reel spreadsheet up to date. Highlight the audios/Reels ideas that you haven’t created yet in red and mark the ones you have completed in green. This will motivate you to keep creating and staying on top of your content calendar.
Hot Tip: When you're ready, create your Reel in Instagram and save it on your Reel spreadsheet as a backup in case your Reel drafts get deleted from Instagram. It’s been known to happen, and you don’t want your hard work to get erased!
